Audi Q7 Roof Rack & Cargo Guide: 4L vs 4M Generations
The Audi Q7 has had two distinct bodies since it launched in 2005, and roof racks, floor mats and trunk liners are all split along that same line. Audi's own chassis code names them 4L (the original) and 4M (the second generation) — shop by those, or by the year range, and you'll land on the right part. Mix them up and a rack or liner cut for one generation won't sit right on the other.
4L vs 4M: Telling Them Apart
4L (2005/2006–2015). The original Q7, larger and heavier-looking, built on the VW Group PL71 platform shared with the Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne of the era.
4M (2015–present, facelifted 2019). The second generation — lighter, smaller footprint, revised roofline. Listings for this generation are usually dated "2015-up" or "2015-2021."
Check your Q7's build year against these ranges before ordering. Facelifts within a generation (the 4M got one in 2019) don't usually change the roof or floor pan enough to need a different part, but a generation change always does.
Roof Racks
Both generations take a rail-mounted, lockable cross bar set — the Q7 has factory roof rails in both generations, so you're choosing finish and generation, not mounting type. For the 4L (2006–2015) there's a silver aluminum set, a black version, and a heavier-duty "Strong" bar in black or silver. For the 4M (2015-up), the same silver/black choice exists in aluminum and black. Floor Mats and Trunk Liners
Same split. 3D molded interior floor mats are sold separately for the 4L (2006–2014) and the 4M (2015-up), with a beige option for the 4L if you'd rather not run black carpet. Trunk liners follow the same two generations, in either rubber (4L 2008–2015, 4M 2015–2019 — the listing title says 4L, which appears to be a labeling error, since the 2015-2019 range is 4M) or carpet-backed (4L, 4M).
Other Parts Worth Knowing About
A couple of less obvious 4L/4M-split parts: a dashboard protector for the 4L, and running board side steps for either generation (4M version here) if you want an easier step up into the cabin.

How do I know if my Q7 is 4L or 4M?
4L covers 2005/2006 through 2015; 4M covers 2015 onward. If you're near the 2015 changeover, check your specific build date or VIN rather than relying on the model year alone, since the changeover happened mid-cycle.
Will a 4L roof rack fit a 4M Q7?
No. Even though both generations have roof rails, the rail spacing and mounting points differ between generations — order for your specific one.
Does the 2019 facelift need different parts from earlier 4M models?
