Porsche 911 1969-1973 Interior Parts Guide: Door Cards, Pockets, Seats & Houndstooth

Porsche 911 1969-1973 interior parts guide

Restoring the cabin of a 1969-1973 Porsche 911 usually starts with one tired part: a seat that has collapsed on the driver's side, a split door pocket, or a door card that has warped behind the vinyl. Then the search begins, and most of what comes up is either for the G-model built from 1974 or is a single used part at a collector's price.

This guide walks through the interior parts we make and stock for the 1969-1973 911 Coupe and Targa: seat foam and Pepita houndstooth fabric, door cards, door pockets and chrome trim, seat belts, sun visors, headliner, dashboard pads and front trunk mats. Some parts also fit the 1969 912; check each listing. For each one we note the years and fitment details that matter, so you order the right part the first time. You can also browse every part for these years on our Porsche 911 1969-1973 parts page.

First, Check Your Year: 1969-1973 vs 1974 and Later

Porsche stretched the 911's wheelbase for the 1969 model year, and the cars built from then until the end of the 1973 model year share most of their interior trim, with small changes from year to year. These cars are often called "F-model" 911s, a name taken from the factory's letter for the 1973 model year and now used loosely for the pre-1974 cars. For 1974 the 911 was reworked as the G-model, and door cards, door pockets and several trim pieces changed with it. That is why our door cards and door pockets are listed for 1969-1973, with separate parts for 1974-1989. Some smaller parts cover a wider range, so always check the years in each listing.

911 or 912. The original 912 was built through the 1969 model year, so these parts apply to the 912 only for the 1969 model year. For 1965-1968 cars, look for the 1965-1968 parts listed separately.

Coupe or Targa. Most parts in this guide fit both. The exceptions are the sun visors, the headliner and the Targa roof key, which are body-specific and noted in their sections below.

Left- or right-hand drive. The door top rails are listed for LHD and RHD cars, and the sun visors for LHD cars. If you drive an RHD 911, send us your car details before ordering other door or dashboard parts.

Seats: Foam and Pepita Houndstooth Fabric

A 911 seat that looks fine from the outside can still sit wrong. After more than fifty years the foam crumbles and the driver sinks onto the frame. Re-covering over old foam only hides the problem for a while.

Seat foam. The 1969-1973 seat cushion foam set is molded polyurethane for the square-back seat, one back pad and one bottom pad, which makes one complete seat. It fits left or right, so order a quantity of 2 for both front seats. Earlier cars have their own set: for a 1965-1968 911 or 912, order the 1965-1968 foam set instead.

Pepita houndstooth fabric. The black-and-white houndstooth Porsche called Pepita is the fabric most owners want for the seat centers. We have two versions, both priced per meter and sent as one continuous length. The embossed Pepita houndstooth fabric comes in black-and-white and other colors, from a 1.5-meter (59 in) wide roll. The pre-laminated Pepita houndstooth fabric comes from a 1.4-meter (55 in) wide roll, bonded to scrim foam and ready for the upholsterer. With either one, 1 meter covers the center panels of the back and base on two seats. For a full interior, the embossed listing recommends 2 meters and the pre-laminated listing 4 meters.

Porsche 911 1969-1973 Door Cards (Door Panels)

The Porsche 911 1969-1973 door card set is a left and right pair in black leatherette with the basket-weave pattern. It is the part to buy when the original card has warped, the vinyl has torn around the pocket, or a previous owner has cut holes for speakers.

Re-covering your own panels. If you are upholstering the doors yourself in a different material, the 1969-1973 door card backing boards give you the bare wooden boards, left and right, ready to upholster. Fit the new boards and check the pocket mounting points before ordering pockets and trim.

Door top rails. The padded strips along the top of the door, under the window, crack and shrink in the sun. The inner door top rail strips (OEM 901.555.083.00 / 901.555.084.00) are listed for the 1964-1973 911 Coupe and Targa, LHD and RHD.

Lock knobs. A small part that shows its age quickly: the door lock knob (OEM 901.531.671.21) is listed for the 911 and 912 from 1965 to 1976.

Door Pockets and Chrome Trim

The 1969-1973 door pocket is one of the most visible parts of the interior, and the one most often broken. The plastic cracks at the mounting points, the chrome strips lift, and the velvet inside wears through. Each door's pocket is made of a front section and a rear section. We make the pocket bins new, in a black leather-textured finish with a velvet-lined inside, in three configurations:

Front door pocket bins: the front sections for the left and right doors.

Rear door pocket bins: the rear sections for the left and right doors.

Complete 4-piece door pocket bin set: front and rear sections for both doors. If both doors need new pockets, the set costs less than buying the front and rear bins separately.

Keeping your own pockets. If the bins are sound and only the trim is tired, there are three options. The 6-piece door pocket chrome trim set has 2 short, 2 long and 2 corner chrome strips for the rear sections of the left and right pockets. The 10-piece door pocket chrome trim set adds the 2 upper trims and their 2 chrome strips. The door pocket upper trim assembly pair is the black top piece with its chrome already fitted, listed for 1968-1973 cars.

Seat Belts for 911, 912 and 356

Seat belts are a safety part, not trim. Webbing that has faded or frayed should be replaced, whatever the rest of the interior looks like. The 3-point retractable seat belt pair for Porsche 911, 912, 914 and 356 is our most popular belt set. The 3-point seat belt set in gray is listed for the 911 from 1965 to 1983, left and right.

Many 1969-1973 cars left the factory with static belts, while others had inertia-reel belts. Before ordering a retractable set, check that your car has the mounting point the retractor needs. Belts are only as strong as the points they bolt to, so have the anchors checked for rust and use a qualified fitter if you are not sure.

Sun Visors, Headliner and Targa Roof Key

Coupe sun visors. For a Coupe, order the 1969-1977 Coupe sun visor set in black or beige.

Targa sun visors. For a Targa, order the Targa sun visor set in black.

Both visor sets come as a left and right pair with brackets, for LHD cars. If only the clip is broken, the visor clip (OEM 911.731.319.00) is listed for 1970-1989.

Headliner. The 911/912 Coupe headliner is a one-piece cream headliner for 1965-1989 Coupes without a sunroof. It does not fit the Targa.

Targa roof key. The Targa roof handle release key (OEM 911.565.075.41) is listed for 1972-1985 Targas, so it covers the 1972 and 1973 cars in this guide but not 1969-1971.

Dashboard Pads and Speaker Grille

Speaker grille. The leather-surface dash speaker grille (OEM 911.552.048.00) is listed for 1969-1976 cars whose dashboard has the speaker opening.

Knee protectors. The polyurethane pads under the dashboard split and go hard. The lower dashboard knee protector set is listed for the 911 from 1969 to 1985, as well as the 912 and 930.

Front Trunk Mats

On the 911 the trunk is at the front, and its mats are often the most neglected part of an otherwise finished car. We make two 4-piece sets for 1969-1973: the black carpet trunk mat set and the black vinyl trunk mat set. Choose vinyl if the car is driven in the wet and the trunk carries anything muddy; choose carpet for a show finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do 1969-1973 door cards fit a 1974 or later Porsche 911?

No. The door cards and pockets changed with the 1974 G-model. For 1974-1989 cars we list separate parts, such as the 911 G 1974-1989 door panel set.

Do these interior parts fit the Porsche 912?

The 912 was built through the 1969 model year, so these 1969-1973 parts apply only to 1969 912s, and not every listing names the 912. For 1965-1968 cars, use the parts listed for those years, such as the 1965-1968 seat foam set.

How much Pepita houndstooth fabric do I need?

1 meter covers the seat centers of two seats. For a full interior, order 2 meters of the embossed fabric or 4 meters of the pre-laminated fabric.

Is the seat foam sold per seat or per pair?

Per seat. Each listing includes one back pad and one bottom pad, and the same set fits left or right. For both front seats, order a quantity of 2.

Which sun visors fit a Targa?

Use the Targa set. The Coupe visors do not fit a Targa.
